Top Corner Champions Cup 2009

TCCC trophyCalling all football league winners…

Top Corner’s Champions Cup is fast approaching. The event, scheduled for Saturday 12th September at the Power League in Mill Hill, is open to all Top Corner league winners over the last 12 months and, barring a small admin fee, it’s free!

So far we’ve got 22 men’s teams signed up but hope to get somewhere in the region of 40. It’s the classic format of a group stage followed by knockout rounds. Only the 4 women’s teams signed up so far but this is generally a smaller competition. We expect to get around 8 teams for this, playing an extended group stage with a final at the end of the day.

If your team have won a league between 15th August 2008 and 14th August 2009 then they are eligible for this event. A list of the qualifiers can be viewed here. Please note this list probably isn’t conclusive so if you think you’ve been missed then contact your league manager for clarification. This is an event not to be missed!

Netball’s equivalent is in the diary for Saturday 10th October and is to be held at the Colombo Centre in Southwark. Click here for further information.

When we threw the bottles of suncream into the Top Corner kit bags before leaving for the Netball Champions’ Cup 2008, it was far more out of habit than it was out of practicality. Lucky we have such habits though as the sun beat down on the Southwark netball courts like it was making up for the forgotten summer. The keen-bean teams that arrived well over an hour before games were due to begin were perfectly happy to sit around waiting, soaking up the rays whilst they got slightly nervous about the battles to come.

The roll-call for the 2008 Netball Champions Cup was as follows:

Flaming Galahs Oval Division 1 Champions Summer 2008
Turnham Tigers Turnham Green A Champions Autumn 2007
Addleshaw Goddard L&F League Champions Winter 2007
Victorious Secrets Vauxhall Weds Div 1 Champions Summer 2008
Park Club Panthers Turnham Green Div 1 Champions Spring 2008
Mace Waterloo Champions Winter 2007/8
SJ Berwin 1 (wildcard) Southwark Div 5 Champions Spring 2008
Metia Honeys (wildcard) Mixed InPaddington 2008 winners

The eight eager teams were divided into two groups of four within which each team played the other three once. All games were played in two halves of fifteen minutes and it wasn’t long before some ladies realized that even if their skills were strong enough to get them through to the knock-out stages, their stamina might let them down! Sunny Octobers are all very well but when you’re playing back-to-back games of hard-fought netball, the heat can be something of a hindrance!

Notable from the group stages were SJ Berwin’s very close run in against a strong Turnham Tigers side, Victorious Secrets’ emphatic win over Park Club Panthers, the brightly coloured Flaming Galahs super-chirpiness and Metia Honeys’ and Mace’s eventual wins in their last games of the day. The winners of each group played the runners up of the other – both Addleshaw Goddard and Turnham Tigers were worthy semi-finalists but had to concede defeat to the teams that everyone’s money had been on to make the final since they first took to the court: Flaming Galahs and Victorious Secrets.

It looked like Victorious Secrets were going to run away with the win as they stretched out a five goal lead early on in the final. Flaming Galahs were not going to go down without a fight though and mid-way through the second half there were only two points in it. Time ran out for the girls in pink though and the slightly tongue-twisting title of Champions Cup Champions 2008 went to the strongest team on the day, Vauxhall victors Victorious Secrets.

After necks were adorned with medals, trophies awarded and photos taken, TC staff and umpires slunk off to nearby Jack’s Bar for a much needed glass (jug) of Pimms and the netballers returned to their various corners of London tired, slightly pinker than they had been that morning but happy in the knowledge they had all played their socks off! The day ran as smooth as sun cream but the most frequent comment heard on Saturday was about how great it was to play with and against such nice teams. Many thanks to the umpires who worked so hard in the sunshine but also to all the wonderful teams who played every win and every defeat in a great spirit. ‘Til next year!

Football Champions Cup 2008

Top Corner Champions Cup: Mill Hill, Saturday 13 September 2008

Top Corner league winners were out in force, all heading towards one destination, the Champions Cup! With teams streaming into the venue, confidence, vigour and reputations were drowning in a pool of uncertainty, as the heavyweights of Top Corner football weighed each other up, all before a ball was kicked.

Southwark’s Slightly Athletic stormed to victory in league A, winning three out of five games by a margin of one goal, finishing top of the table with four wins and a draw. Diamonds FC also qualified for the next round as runners-up. It was the end of the road for Banter TownPeabodyLapwing FC and Vendredi Soir.

Spanish Connection finished second behind Bloomberg in league B, in what proved to be a very tight group. A single point left Marketforce with third place and heading out of the tournament, along with Finsbury Park’s The Wind Farmers in fourth and Battersea team Release the Wasps in fifth.

In group C, Club Stormy and RIP Hatseat ran out in first and second place respectively. ML Hedgehunters were left ruing dropped points early on as they finished a point behind RIP in third. Heading out of the tournament with them were Bookseller Fives champions HarperCollins andSporting Cromwell.

The Stamford Rejects from Turnham Green and Ryder HKS FC finished first and second in league D. The Rejects were on fine form; held to just one draw and winning the remaining fixtures in style. Ryder lost only once en route to their second place finish. Mugs Away and Holloway couldn’t keep pace with the runaway leaders and fell at the first hurdle.

In group E, North London Cally Thistle and Old Street champions Team Ice Cream progressed into the knockout stages of the competition, with Cally finishing as league winners. Holly’s Hammersand SG All Stars were separated only by goal difference for third place; nonetheless this proved to be academic as both teams crashed out of the competition along with DCK at the foot off the table.

ICM Athletic of Brixton and the Not@Allstars finished first and second in group F. Not@Allstars had beaten ICM earlier on, inflicting their only loss in the group stages. However, ICM came storming back to defeat Not@Allstars in the latter stages after a good run. Sheffield WednesdaysUMI Hotel andEasynet were on their way home to Islington, Paddington and Caledonian Road respectively.

Bloomberg, Stamford Rejects, North London Cally Thistle and ICM Athletic received a bye into the quarter-finals as the best four first-placed teams. League A winners Slightly Athletic were defeated by Club Stormy to book a place in the quarter-finals. A penalty shootout decided the game between Spanish Connection and Not@Allstars, Spanish Connection stealing it 6-5 to progress. Team Ice Cream’s involvement was ended by RyderHKS FC as they won 1-0. RIP Hatseat would also need the lottery of the penalties to end Diamonds FC run in the competition, winning 6-5 to go through.

Broadcast Fives champions Bloomberg were overcome by Club Stormy on penalties, winning 4-3 after the full time whistle had blown at 0-0, whilst Spanish Connection recorded a 2-1 win over North London Cally Thistle. Ryder HKS FC were beaten 2-0 by a confident ICM Athletic and the last game of the quarter-finals saw RIP Hatseat knock out The Stamford Rejects 2-0.

The semi-finals pitted Club Stormy of the Brixton Premiership against Spanish Connection, champions of North Greenwich; both teams had made it through on penalties. There was a pivotal moment towards the end of normal time as Spanish Connection had a player dismissed and Club Stormy went on to win 2-1. We had our first finalists. The second semi-final between ICM Athletic and RIP Hatseat was decided by a single goal from RIP and therefore league C’s finest were to meet in the final.

Club Stormy and RIP Hatseat ran out normal time with a no score draw, neither team giving or taking any chances. The final headed to penalty kicks. Despite Club Stormy’s best efforts to replicate their form on spot kicks earlier on, the day belonged to RIP Hatseat as they seized victory by 5-4 and were crowned Champions Cup winners 2008.

North Greenwich team RIP Hatseat walked way with not only the famous Champions Cup trophy and medals but also the bragging rights as the best men’s five-a-side team in London… for the next 12 months at least!

Individual awards were also handed out to the players that made their mark on the tournament,Simon Rutter of the Not@Allstars winning the top goal scorer prize and the player of the tournament trophy was awarded to Simon Machola of ML Hedgehunters.

Southwark Premiership team KPMG are the new women’s Top Corner champions of champions after a thrilling 1-0 victory over last year’s winners Southside FC. KPMG had a superb day, only losing once in their group to eventual semi-finalists London United.

Women’s group A saw KPMG set the early pace but after a slow start Camden team London Unitedgot into their groove and along with the player of the tournament Amanda O’Neill went unbeaten for the last six games earning themselves a place in the last four with KPMG.

In the other women’s group, Southside started as they left off last year but as the day went on, the group became tighter and tighter and in the end only three points separated first and third position. Southside secured top spot and were joined in the semi-finals by last year’s beaten finalists Crouch End Tigers. A special mention must go to Borough champions Kikk United who missed out by the narrowest of margins.

Southside won their semi-final with a convincing 3-0 victory although London United did create chances to make the encounter a close affair. The other semi was between Finsbury Park’s Crouch End Tigers and KPMG. Just one goal separated the teams and it was KPMG who won the battle and faced Southside in the final.

The final was another low scoring game and KPMG, along with the tournament’s golden boot winnerSteph Shaw, ran out winners. A huge congratulations to them, and the well-deserved prize of knowing that they are Top Corner’s number one women’s team for 2008.

Don’t forget to register for next year’s tournament should you finish in the top two in your league (unless you are in a championship division).
