The Best Team Names of 2009

Round about this time of the year we like round up some of the more inventive team names from the leagues.  Here again is last year’s impressive collection of daftness.   Want more?  Click the link at the bottom to check out lists for previous years.

This years lucky winners will be announced in January …

10. Al’s Cunning Trousers

Straight off the bargain rail at Primark and into our top ten.

9. The Young & the Restless

The first netball team in Top Corner history to be named after this long-running day time soap opera, set in Wisconsin.  Which has to be worth something.

8. Grampus 8 My Hamster

This is exactly what happens when players spend too much time in the pub discussing pop culture and not enough on the pitch.  For the rest of us … Arsene Wenger’s CV when he took over at Arsenal included a recent stint at Japanese outfit Grampus 8, which roughly translates as “Lucky Number Dolphin” .  Older readers will recall the classic tabloid headline Freddie Starr Ate My Hamster.

7. Alonzo de Guzman FC

The first team in Top Corner history to be named after a man who, according to Wikipedia, was the commander of the Spanish Armada (a mole tells us it’s also the name of a horse the team won a few bob on-Ed).

6. Crystal Phallus

The old ones are the best.  See also: Norfolk n’ Chance.

5. Dyslexia Untied

Obviously we cannot codnone the mokcery of the lexicogphylcly chalng;

4. ABCDE FC

Keeping it simple, possibly for the benefit of the previous team.

3. Dog in a Bathdoginabath

The first team in Top Corner history to be named after … a dog in a bath.  And the day that there’s no place for surrealism in parks football, all I can say is … “Bicycle Pump”

2. Halal! (Is it meat you’re looking for?)
The much mocked Lionel Richie classic (all together now: “Are you somewhere feeling lonely, or is someone feeling you?”) is mined once more for laughs by a team of kebab-eating netballers.

1. Euston, We Have A Problem

NASA and all those involved in the Apollo 13 debacle (Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Ron Howard, don’t be shy now!) would be proud and honoured.  And for the first time, a netball team – from the Euston league, obviously- claims top spot on this glorious list.

Special mentions to:

Red Star Opramen … A tribute to Czech beer and old-school Eastern-bloc football teams.
Eff & Jeff …. Although clearly we cannot have effing and jeffing in our leagues, we enjoyed this one.
Crack Chicken Commandos … Nobody messes with chickens on crack.  Especially if they are trained soldiers.
CSKA Meatloaf  … Yet another Eastern European team with a proud record is culled for the sake of childish amusement.
Acton Villa … just one misplaced consonant takes us from the Premier League to nowhere.  See also – Brixton & Hove Albion.
North Korea 66ers … with the plucky Communist state about to make its second World Cup appearance in South Africa, time to remember the last one.  They beat Italy!
Sons of Pitches … see also – Smack My Pitch Up.

Lists for previous years.

Play Ping Pong for Sport Relief

SportsRelief

Charity Round-the-Table Ping Pong
Friday 19th March 5-8 pm at T47.

As the amazing video above shows, ping-pong can be a life-affirming experience …

Tomorrow is Sport Relief and we are running our own charity ping pong event in the bar 5-8 PM.

The rules are simple: 8-10 players run round a ping pong table, taking turns to have a shot.  Miss and you lose one of your three lives.  At the end the last two players play to five, and the winner gets to donate the proceeds to Sport Relief, and a free drink!  (This last bit means the same player won’t keep winning)

Players will be asked for a 50p donation to play a match, and T47 will match every donation, which means £10 will be raised per game.  Each game lasts about 15 minutes.

Bring your friends down for the evening and enjoy round-the-table, raising money for Sport Relief.

Beards optional.

Remember, you can hire a table at T47 for only £6 per hour – best value in London!

T47’s official launch party – it’s Super Teams…!

T47-logoOK – this is it. The one you’ve been waiting for. The. Big. One.

We are very proud to announce the launch party for T47 sports venue at London Bridge, and some party it will be. We are going to be inviting all sorts of London media people along, and our event will see money being raised for the extremely good cause of Kids Company who provide practical, emotional and educational support to vulnerable inner-city children and young people. A totally fun event which will be delivering real support to a fantastic London charity – beat that!

Camila Batmanghelidjh, founder of Kids Company comments,
“Participation in sport helps young people emotionally and educationally.  These are the exact values Kids Company promotes and we are proud to be associated with the launch of such an exciting new venue for London.”

The event itself will be at T47 (of course!) from 6pm on Monday 15th March 2010, and will take the form of a Super Teams competition. A squad of male and female players will represent each team entering and the teams take each other on at:

  • 5-a-side football
  • high 5s netball
  • dodgeball
  • archery
  • table tennis

Space in the competition is limited, and we are inviting some of our friends from across the London business community to make up the competing mixed teams. There will be an entry fee of £200 per team and we are asking teams to raise a matching amount through sponsorship. A hot meal for your squad will be provided afterwards in the T47 bar. All proceeds will go to Kids Company. Our support for Kids Company will then continue after the event, through the provision of T47 facilities for Kids Company use on a weekly basis.

If you are interested in entering or finding out more, please contact Andy Harding for further information – andy.harding@topcorner.co.uk, 020 7036 9917.

Dodgeball Tournaments

average joes team pic-1Dodgeball.  It’s the sport of kings.  Well, not actually kings. And it might not be a real sport.

But anyway, you can get all dressed-up like, have a few responsible non-performance enhancing drinks, and … you know, dodge a ball! You might even come up against the Average Joes (left), who graced a recent tournament. They may not have won any games, but … etc etc.

There’s a league at T47, and a monthly tournament.  The next one is Saturday 20th March, 1-6pm. It’s just £110 for a whole day’s Dodgeball action – and because Dodgeball UK are friends of ours, you can get £10 off by quoting this code when you book: TCDODGE.

It’s a load of balls!

F*ckin' Chuck NorrisAnother message from T47’s resident Dodgeball maestro, Andy Stedman

Hello and welcome to another dodgy blog full of cheesy puns and dodgeball tales. It has been a fab three months for Dodgeball UK, we’ve settled in brilliantly at T47 in London Bridge and have loads of events lined up for all you wrench-dodgers out there.

We’ve got the Dodgeball UK London Leagues, we’re booking in stag and hen do’s, birthday parties, company sessions (go annoy your boss into agreeing one of these for you), taster sessions and training sessions! We love it and are glad you do too. Everyone seems to regress to being a kid again once they set foot on the dodgeball court, and in this hectic world we live in that can only be a good thing.

The highlight for me so far has been the Christmas Tournament (above). Click for more…
