7 a-side Football Finally Arrives In Brixton

Top Corner is pleased to announce that we will be launching a new Wednesday evening Brixton 7 a-side league at our latest venue the Evelyn Grace Academy. The EVG is a state-of-the art facility designed by world renowned architect Zaha Hadid and provides a fantastic setting in which play your football. More importantly, the pitch itself is also a top-notch and purpose built for 7 a-side. Changing rooms and shower facilities are equally impressive. We are aiming to get our new league underway from November 2nd and are now accepting new applicants, if you would like the opportunity to play at one of London’s most unique venues drop us a form and we can get you on pitch in a matter of weeks.

The EVG is also a stone’s throw away from Brixton where you have the benefits of a vibrant and bustling nightlife with plenty of transport links to help see you home when you do decide to call time. The league will be our first 7 a-side outing in South London and we are able to offer it to you at great introductory rate of £66 per game (inc VAT) which works out cheaper than equivalent 6 a-sides. If you have been waiting for the opportunity to enjoy the more cultured side to small-sided football the spacious pitch at EVG will certainly please maestros amongst you all.

If you would like to know more about this exciting opportunity then please contact Billy Cook for more info, we are expecting this one to prove popular so we look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards,
Bayo

Just Play Kickabouts

After a long and enjoyable stint over at T47 we will be taking our Saturday kickabout onto newer pastures and making the move to Vauxhall. It has been hugely rewarding to watch the kickabout develop into such a success and we are looking forward to the challenge of making the sessions even more interesting and involved for everyone.

We are now a part of the FAs Just Play scheme and will have added resources, infrastructrue and expertise to call upon in ensuring we can continue to grow the kickabout in the best way possible. We will also have the benefits of a fantastic 4G surface to enjoy. Just Play offers you the opportunity to come down for a casual game of football and we aim to make the sessions as played-led as possible. Whether you it’s Wembley Knockout, Headers and Volleys or Football Rounders we have a number of interesting games that you’ll be able to enjoy if a full-blown match isn’t your thing.

The Best Team Name of 2010

The Bensons

FC Twente Bensons

Our annual countdown …

10. Ball’s Out
It sounds obscene, but it’s actually not … rare example of a double non-tendre?

9. PR-Tick Thistle
Public Relations may not be the most popular industry in the world, but this team is doing its bit to soften the image – putting a new ‘spin’ on the Scottish Division 1 team affectionately known as The Jags.

8. Sultans of Ping Pong
When Dire Straits proclaimed themselves the ‘Sultans of Swing’ in 1978, let’s face it: no one else was competing for the title.  This team from our table tennis league takes naffness to another level.

7. Kiss My Pass
Mixed netball is a growing sport in this country (Aussies having worked out long ago that it’s a great way to get to know members of the opposite sex).  Curiously, only mixed teams made our list this year … maybe they just have more fun?

Old Torquinions Are The Islington Monday 11-a-side Summer 2010 Champions

 Islington 11-a-side Summer 2010

Old Torquinions took the Islington Monday 11-a-side Summer 2010 title by winning a staggering 11 of their 12 fixtures. They lost just once against  Midnight Creepers way back in July. They were the leagues top scorers with 35  and had the best defence shipping just 10 goals. I dont think it is any coincidence that both the Player of the Season and Top Scorer award went to the champions and one half of their deadly attacking due, Jon Laycock. Jon scored 13 goals, beating his closest rival, Dwayne Francis (Midnight Creepers),to the Golden Boot by 2 goals. For Jon’s Player of the Season award he won by receiving 3 nominations. Chima Amaluzor (AFC Peabody), Jeriel Cajigas (Whittington Hospital FC), Dwayne Francis (Midnight Creepers) and Paul Mulvey (Midnight Creepers) narrowly missed out with 2 nominations.

Top Corner Rolls Out Red Carpet For League Winners!

Builders FCTop-Corner-master-RedSMALL

September 9th 2010 saw Top Corner run its very first League Winners Awards night, hosted at London Bridge’s sporting hot spot T47!

The awards night was organised by league managers Raj Pahal and Jen Hart.  ”Presentations are a tricky thing to organise league by league because the title could be claimed at 9 pm on a winter’s night,” says Jen. “It’s not much fun getting your trophy and medals from the match official afterwards, with no-one to see.  Now that we have our own venue with a licensed bar, we thought we’d invite everyone down.”

Raj 'n' Jen ... awww“We didn’t really know what kind of response we would have,” says Raj. “We were delighted that eight of the nine teams we invited made it along.  The atmosphere was brilliant and it was great to see netballers and footballers socialising!”

Darren Sooprayen was one of those receiving awards on the night, said “We all had a really good time … It’s certainly given us a huge incentive to win the league and get the invite back for the next one!”  The evening was such a success that it’s going to be run four times annually.  The next LWA’s (League Winners Awards) will be hosted in December, with invites going out to football and netball league winners and runners up.BuildersQuote

“The evening was brilliant and we’re already looking forward to the next one in the coming months – it’s going to be even bigger and better!” says Jen.

Aston Carter Cruise To Title & Just Miss Out On The Domestic Double

Islington 11-a-side Wednesday Summer 2010

With a season reminiscent of the Arsenal team known as ‘The Invincibles’ Aston Carter took the Islington 11-a-side Wednesday Summer 2010 league without a single loss to their name. It looked as though the double could be won too but Aston Carter were beaten 2-1 in the semi-finals of the Islington & Canada Water Cup .

Aston-Carter-Islington-Summer-11's

Linklaters FC & Barlow Lyde & Gilbert LLP ran Aston Carter closest during the season both taking a point from the game but it will be Allen & Overy who may feel they could have made the league table tighter as they outscored all other teams over the season smashing in 38 goals in 12 games which gained them second place. Aston Carter the champions scored 29 a figure nearly reached by a few teams but their seasons success was built on their defence which conceeded only 5 goals which is an amazing record. Ashurst were 3rd but were joint on points with second placed Allen & Overy.

S Saunders was also named the Player of the Season after recieving 5 nominations which was one ahead of  Tom Green (Barlow Lyde & Gilbert LLP) and Raaj Miah (West End FC).

I&IM Infidels Take The Deloitte Title 2010

Deloitte 11’s Summer 2010

I&IM Infidels took the Deloitte 11’s 2010 title after smashing TMT Titans 7-1. With a record of 7 wins and only one loss they are certainly worthy champions. I&IM Infidels outscored the rest of the league bagging 31 and maybe more importantly had the tightest defence, only conceding 7 times. Considering the season before they took just 6 points from a possible 30 this really is a great achievement. BPRC Barracudas take second place just 3 points off the pace and 3rd place see’s Banking & Capital Markets on 14 points. Next are TMT Titans, REHL Madrid and P&S Pandas. The bottom 3 places are occupied by CF FC, Drivers Jonas Deloitte and finally EI United.

In the individual awards Psp Butler (P&S Pandas) takes the Golden Boot with his haul of 5 goals. Ross Anson (BPRC Barracuders) & Danny Plaxton (TMT Titans) narrowly missed out after scoring 4 each. Danny Plaxton doesn’t finish the season empty handed though as he is named the Player of the Season after receiving 3 nominations. Well done Danny.

Your match officials asked me to mention that the league was a pleasure to referee. Hope you all enjoyed the season and see you in 2011.
