One for the Ladies! Or is it Women?

LADIES’ OR WOMEN’s?? Ladies

We’ve been having a bit of debate within the Top Corner ranks as to whether female leagues are better referred to as Ladies’ Leagues or Women’s Leagues.

The debate continues as the TC team cannot come to a consensus on this one and so we’re putting it directly to our teams.

Top Corner Rolls Out Red Carpet For The Third Time

Thursday 17th March 2011 saw Top Corner hosted its third successive awards evening for football and netball league winners, runners up and the individual players that made all the difference as top goal scorer or player of the season.

The evening was dedicated to those teams that had won or were runners up in the Autumn 2010 season. As expected it was a great turn out by footballers and netballers alike, with celebrations in full flow throughout the course of the evening.

“It was another brilliant evening and teams loved being cheered on and applauded when receiving awards, the live music is also a big hit” said netball league manager and co host Jen Hart.

“We are thoroughly looking forward to hosting the next event on Thursday 31st March and expect it to be the biggest to date” commented football league manager and co host Raj Pahal

To be involved in a Top Corner Awards night, you must either win or finish second in your respective league or tournament or finish as top scorer or player of the season. Top Corner will then send you an official invite to the next scheduled evening.

Please click here to be guided to the online album of pictures taken on the evening.

Spare a thought for the hosts!

Top Corner Awards Nights

Our second Top Corner Awards night in December was a massive success.  Team and individual award winners were invited to a fantastic evening of music, comedy, food and drink and silverware.  Over 150 turned up from our football and netball leagues.  Full photos are here.

If you fancy some of what she’s having (left), your luck is in.  Our Awards Nights will now be held four times per year.

We’re delighted that this concept has proved so popular and we’ve had to hold the Spring Awards over two evenings. Thursday 10th March is already full, but we have space left for Thursday 31st March. Award winners will already have received an invite, but if you would like to come along please contact Raj on 020 7036 9919.

Rewarding Failure
For April (date TBC), we’re planning an alternative evening which is open to any Top Corner teams.  As part of that evening, we’ll be focusing on the teams that are more familiar with the lower end of the league table.

  • Has your team has finished bottom three seasons in a row?
  • Been on the wrong end of an unmerciful beating?
  • Or snatched defeat from the very jaws of victory?

You don’t have to be completely rubbish at your chosen sport to attend, but if you are you’ll be especially welcome.

We’re taking nominations now – if you think YOUR team is so bad it’s good, and deserves an award recognising this, leave a comment below explaining why.  Or if you feel too embarrassed to do that, contact Raj (Football: 020 7036 9919) or Jen (Netball: 020 7036 9911) in confidence.

The Best Team Name of 2010

The Bensons

FC Twente Bensons

Our annual countdown …

10. Ball’s Out
It sounds obscene, but it’s actually not … rare example of a double non-tendre?

9. PR-Tick Thistle
Public Relations may not be the most popular industry in the world, but this team is doing its bit to soften the image – putting a new ‘spin’ on the Scottish Division 1 team affectionately known as The Jags.

8. Sultans of Ping Pong
When Dire Straits proclaimed themselves the ‘Sultans of Swing’ in 1978, let’s face it: no one else was competing for the title.  This team from our table tennis league takes naffness to another level.

7. Kiss My Pass
Mixed netball is a growing sport in this country (Aussies having worked out long ago that it’s a great way to get to know members of the opposite sex).  Curiously, only mixed teams made our list this year … maybe they just have more fun?
