Top Corner Rolls Out Red Carpet For League Winners!

Builders FCTop-Corner-master-RedSMALL

September 9th 2010 saw Top Corner run its very first League Winners Awards night, hosted at London Bridge’s sporting hot spot T47!

The awards night was organised by league managers Raj Pahal and Jen Hart.  ”Presentations are a tricky thing to organise league by league because the title could be claimed at 9 pm on a winter’s night,” says Jen. “It’s not much fun getting your trophy and medals from the match official afterwards, with no-one to see.  Now that we have our own venue with a licensed bar, we thought we’d invite everyone down.”

Raj 'n' Jen ... awww“We didn’t really know what kind of response we would have,” says Raj. “We were delighted that eight of the nine teams we invited made it along.  The atmosphere was brilliant and it was great to see netballers and footballers socialising!”

Darren Sooprayen was one of those receiving awards on the night, said “We all had a really good time … It’s certainly given us a huge incentive to win the league and get the invite back for the next one!”  The evening was such a success that it’s going to be run four times annually.  The next LWA’s (League Winners Awards) will be hosted in December, with invites going out to football and netball league winners and runners up.BuildersQuote

“The evening was brilliant and we’re already looking forward to the next one in the coming months – it’s going to be even bigger and better!” says Jen.

Mixed Netball Opportunities with TopCorner

Last Wednesday (July 28th) saw the culmination of our Summer season at Liverpool Street with a few of the teams deciding fancy dress was the most apt way to mark the occassion. The result was one of the strangest adverts for mixed netball we’ve seen in a long time!

Team America, a rogue collective of dysfunctional super-heroes and eccentrics took on C U Next Wednesday who probably best resembled a stag-party looking for the bar. C U Next Wednesday, complete with cheerleaders, edged the game whilst Team America took the accolades for the season. Congratulations to all involved!

We currently have mixed Netball availability at the following venues:

London Bridge starting August 9th

Vauxhall starting August 16th

If you’d like to get involved please contact Jennie.Hart@topcorner.co.uk or Bayo@topcorner.co.uk

Charity super teams tournament launches T47

T47-logoIMG_4677_lowCROPIMG_4813_lowCROP

The evening of Monday 15th March 2010 saw the official launch party for the T47 sports venue. We put together a fun-packed super teams event, with 8 teams from a variety of London organisations competing across 5 different sports – 5-a-side football, high five netball, dodgeball, archery and table tennis.

The event saw all proceeds being given to London charity Kids Company, who provide practical, emotional and educational support to vulnerable inner-city children and young people. Founder Camila Batmanghelidjh came along to help Top Corner MD Kevin Burns present the prizes and she made a very inspirational speech about the work of Kids Company. Kevin also presented Camila with a cheque for £1400.

You can view some great photos from the event online now.

The event was won by law firm Freshfields, with their player Kate Argent taking player of the tournament as well. It was incredibly close though with only goal difference settling matters – here is the final table:

Our sincere thanks go out to all the teams and players who took part – it was their participation and support that made the event the fun that it was. We would also like to thank 20/20 Archery and Dodgeball UK for giving their time and expertise, and Smith’s Catering for helping with the lovely food.

For information about using T47 to help create your event please email Andy or call 020 7036 9917.

T47’s official launch party – it’s Super Teams…!

T47-logoOK – this is it. The one you’ve been waiting for. The. Big. One.

We are very proud to announce the launch party for T47 sports venue at London Bridge, and some party it will be. We are going to be inviting all sorts of London media people along, and our event will see money being raised for the extremely good cause of Kids Company who provide practical, emotional and educational support to vulnerable inner-city children and young people. A totally fun event which will be delivering real support to a fantastic London charity – beat that!

Camila Batmanghelidjh, founder of Kids Company comments,
“Participation in sport helps young people emotionally and educationally.  These are the exact values Kids Company promotes and we are proud to be associated with the launch of such an exciting new venue for London.”

The event itself will be at T47 (of course!) from 6pm on Monday 15th March 2010, and will take the form of a Super Teams competition. A squad of male and female players will represent each team entering and the teams take each other on at:

  • 5-a-side football
  • high 5s netball
  • dodgeball
  • archery
  • table tennis

Space in the competition is limited, and we are inviting some of our friends from across the London business community to make up the competing mixed teams. There will be an entry fee of £200 per team and we are asking teams to raise a matching amount through sponsorship. A hot meal for your squad will be provided afterwards in the T47 bar. All proceeds will go to Kids Company. Our support for Kids Company will then continue after the event, through the provision of T47 facilities for Kids Company use on a weekly basis.

If you are interested in entering or finding out more, please contact Andy Harding for further information – andy.harding@topcorner.co.uk, 020 7036 9917.

Caught in the net: Women are forsaking the gym for the netball court

By Kate Youde

Sunday Independent 14th February 2010

For some it brings back memories of happy school games; for others it means overcoming horrific flashbacks of gym knickers. But more women are returning to the netball court, lured by the prospect of exercise and team spirit.

The number of people aged 16 and over playing netball at least once a week leapt by 12 per cent to 133,500 in October 2009. According to Sport England, there was a 52 per cent rise in players aged 20 to 24.

Tracey Neville, a former England international and commentator for Sky Sports, said at a time when there was “a massive drive towards getting fit and healthy and reducing obesity”, netball is an easy sport to pick up because everybody had played it at school and knows the rules.

The amateur sport attracts up to 250,000 television viewers, with Sky Sports screening matches from the nine-team Superleague weekly, as well as internationals. “People are starting to recognise the sport, follow it and get an interest in it,” said Ms Neville, whose brothers Gary and Phil are Premiership footballers. “When people can relate to the sport, they want to go out and play. It’s like when Wimbledon’s on, all the tennis courts are full.”
