This year’s annual Top Corner Netball Champions Cup was the biggest and best to date. With 12 ladies teams and 12 mixed teams competing for their respective Cups, we had a full house and took over the netball courts at Waterloo’s GMH Park.
In the Ladies Cup the contenders consisted of the strongest teams from across the Top Corner leagues from the past year. The mixed contenders consisted of a combination of established Top Corner mixed teams and a wide and wonderful mix including a football team I convinced to turn into a netball team for the day, groups of friends and colleagues and former Top Corner mixed teams. My particular thanks to new mixed teams Top Dogs, Hot Dogs, 50p You’re Having a Laugh, Team Penguins, The Seven Dwarves, Crazy Banana Boys and The Killers who in some cases have never played netball in their lives! The day began in an energetic fashion with teams arriving bright and early to warm up and talk tactics.

I’m pleased to announce that the Netball Cinic will finally be back in action this June. We will be taking bookings from June 1st with sessions themselves set to resume from June 16th.
Throughout the past couple of months we’ve been working hard to find a new home for the clinic and I can now confirm that we will be moving toVauxhall on Thursday evenings from 18:30 to 20:00. We are hope that moving to mid-week will mean that more of you will be able to take part than ever before.
We are happy to take on teams or individuals, guys or girls and as long as you want to enjoy yourselves and learn some new tricks I’m certain you will get something from the clinic…
The historic 10th year of Broadcast Fives was blessed by beautiful weather and numbers rose once again on last year, which means even more money raised for the Vision Charity.
Thursday 17th March 2011 saw Top Corner hosted its third successive awards evening for football and netball league winners, runners up and the individual players that made all the difference as top goal scorer or player of the season.
The evening was dedicated to those teams that had won or were runners up in the Autumn 2010 season. As expected it was a great turn out by footballers and netballers alike, with celebrations in full flow throughout the course of the evening.
“It was another brilliant evening and teams loved being cheered on and applauded when receiving awards, the live music is also a big hit” said netball league manager and co host Jen Hart.
“We are thoroughly looking forward to hosting the next event on Thursday 31st March and expect it to be the biggest to date” commented football league manager and co host Raj Pahal
To be involved in a Top Corner Awards night, you must either win or finish second in your respective league or tournament or finish as top scorer or player of the season. Top Corner will then send you an official invite to the next scheduled evening.
Pleaseclick here to be guided to the online album of pictures taken on the evening.
Our second Top Corner Awards night in December was a massive success. Team and individual award winners were invited to a fantastic evening of music, comedy, food and drink and silverware. Over 150 turned up from our football and netball leagues. Full photos are here.
If you fancy some of what she’s having (left), your luck is in. Our Awards Nights will now be held four times per year.
We’re delighted that this concept has proved so popular and we’ve had to hold the Spring Awards over two evenings. Thursday 10th March is already full, but we have space left for Thursday 31st March. Award winners will already have received an invite, but if you would like to come along please contact Raj on 020 7036 9919.
Rewarding Failure
For April (date TBC), we’re planning an alternative evening which is open to any Top Corner teams. As part of that evening, we’ll be focusing on the teams that are more familiar with the lower end of the league table.
Has your team has finished bottom three seasons in a row?
Been on the wrong end of an unmerciful beating?
Or snatched defeat from the very jaws of victory?
You don’t have to be completely rubbish at your chosen sport to attend, but if you are you’ll be especially welcome.
We’re taking nominations now – if you think YOUR team is so bad it’s good, and deserves an award recognising this, leave a comment below explaining why. Or if you feel too embarrassed to do that, contact Raj (Football: 020 7036 9919) or Jen (Netball: 020 7036 9911) in confidence.
10. Ball’s Out
It sounds obscene, but it’s actually not … rare example of a double non-tendre?
9. PR-Tick Thistle
Public Relations may not be the most popular industry in the world, but this team is doing its bit to soften the image – putting a new ‘spin’ on the Scottish Division 1 team affectionately known as The Jags.
8. Sultans of Ping Pong
When Dire Straits proclaimed themselves the ‘Sultans of Swing’ in 1978, let’s face it: no one else was competing for the title. This team from our table tennis league takes naffness to another level.
7. Kiss My Pass
Mixed netball is a growing sport in this country (Aussies having worked out long ago that it’s a great way to get to know members of the opposite sex). Curiously, only mixed teams made our list this year … maybe they just have more fun?
Every year Top Corner holds an informal competition for the best team name in the leagues. Here’s last year’s list. This year we thought we’d ask our players for their nominations and views.
Our shortlist is shown below … what do you think? Let us know which gets your vote – or nominate others that you think should be on the list! Netball teams are not well represented here, so we’re particularly keen to hear about more.
