Best Team Name 2011 … before we get to 2013

We usually get round to compiling this important list in January some time, but hey – we had a lot on!

So here we go …

10. Dissent Etienne
Back in the old days, before David Ginola, Robert Pires and Thierry Henry were thought of, AS St-Étienne were the epitome of working-class French football.  Backchat to refs?  De rigueur!

9. FC Twente Somethings
Last year’s winners FC Twente Bensons got there first, but we liked this a lot.

8. [Insert Name] United
Completely subverting the whole concept of name, man … woooaah!

7. Crunchy Frog
Superintendent Parrot ate one of those! Other promising team names just waiting to be mined from this obscure Monty Python sketch about unusual recipes in a chocolate factory include Cockroach Clusters and Anthrax Ripple.

6. Sparta Lebowski
Any mention of the Coen Brothers classic has to be worth a place.  A name that artfully combines images of hardline Eastern bloc discipline with California-based slacking,  it really ties the list together.

sian-massey-007

5. Rapid Viennetta
Back in the 1980s “one slice was never enough” of the allegedly-irresistible Viennetta dessert, without which no dinner party was complete.  Rapid Vienna, despite an awesome 32 Austrian league titles, have only two miserable Intertotos to their name internationally.

4. Occupy Ball Street
I think we all agree with their sense of dissatisfaction – but what do they really want?

3. Sian Massey’s Mates
Sian Massey (left) was the assistant ref who helped bring about the downfall of Sky’s Richard Keys & Andy Gray, who believed that no woman could possibly understand the offside rule.  As it turned out, she did.  But then again, it seems that the real reason for the kerfuffle getting out into the open was that Gray’s phone had been hacked by the News of the World, a publication not unrelated to Sky, and he wasn’t playing nice.  Well, anyway – who wouldn’t want to be mates with the excellent Ms Massey?

2. Fiorentina Turner
Simply the best! Better than all the rest!

Oh, except for …

1. Space Jam Changed My Life
Our first basketball league features a team that celebrates the, ahem, influence of the 1996 movie in which “the world’s greatest athlete [Michael Jordan] meets the world’s greatest cartoon character [Bugs Bunny]“.

Special mentions: Sheffield Tuesday, Dyslexia Untied (the old ones are the best) that’s enough football puns – Ed.

A special request for this year … we need more netball teams in the list.  The great days of Victorious Secrets and It’s Not Pretty Being Easy are no longer with us.  Instead, just a lot of teams called ‘Divas’.

Football opportunities this Spring

We have 3 spaces at Canada Water 5s and 1 last space at Vauxhall 7s.

Canada Water Tuesday 5s Spring 2012 (3 SPACES)

Our popular Canada Water league will be expanding two divisions from March creating spaces for newcomers to enjoy one of our most popular venues. The league represents fantastic value at £460 (inc vat) for a 10 game season and with the expansion come the added benefits of fully integrated promotion and relegation to ensure the competition is interesting and all teams can play at a level that best suits their experience. Games are played at Bacon’s college where we have the benefits of excellent facilities and good transport options. The pitches are only a stop from Canary Wharf or two stops from London Bridge with matches taking place between 19.00 and 22.00 on Tuesday evenings. The league expansion represents an excellent opportunity to join a league that is otherwise full year round.

Vauxhall Monday 7 a-side Spring 2012 (1 SPACE)

Since their introduction last Summer our Vauxhall 7 a-side leagues quickly established themselves as some of our marquee leagues. The Vauxhall leagues are played on one of London’s few 4G surfaces and the pitch size allows and to play a game that retains many of the best aspects of the full-sized game. The league is competitively priced at £480 (inc vat) for an 8 games season. Matches are 45 minutes long and are played between 19.00 and 22.00. Our venue is located at LBOS, between Kennington and Vauxhall making access from the Northern and Victoria lines very straightforward. Work has now begun on new changing areas and a cafe which will make LBOS a flagship sports hub. There is only one space remaining for the Spring season so get your applications in early.

To find out more about these exciting opportunities please contact Bayo Obasaju on 0207 036 9915. Otherwise get your application forms in to avoid disappointment.

After a short hiatus over the holiday season we are pleased to announce that our popular Just Play sessions will be starting again in February at the fantastic Lilian Baylis Old School in Vauxhall. It has been hugely rewarding to watch the kick-about develop into such a success so we are delighted to get under way again.  We continue to try and make our sessions as interesting and involving as possible.

As part of the FAs Just Play scheme we now have added resources, infrastructure and expertise to call upon in ensuring we can grow our kick-abouts in the best way possible. Lunchtime netball league starting at Canary Wharf

Top Corner has teamed up with the Reebok Sports Club to deliver our first lunchtime league for the city.

The sports club is situated in Canada Square, Canary Wharf, in the heart of London’s vibrant business district. Occupying 100,000 square feet over three floors, the Reebok is one of Europe’s most exciting fitness spaces with a vast array of facilities and services.

The club has been named as ‘Britain’s Best Gym’ by Men’s Health Magazine as well as being commended as Time Out’s Most Luxurious Gym so we were delighted when they approached us about a collaborative project to develop women’s netball.

Top Corner will be lending it’s expertise and passion for netball to deliver an engaging and rewarding alternative to the your average work-out. We will provide two fully qualified umpires and all your equipment so all you’ll need to do is to pop down and play!

We will be running a FREE taster session this Friday lunch between 12.00 and 13.00 with our inaugural league to launch the following week on February 3rd. Both the taster and the league will be open to members and non-members alike who will be able to enjoy use of the changing facilities and shower.

For more information about this fantastic opportunity please call Jen Hart on 0207 036 9911. To enter this league click here

Basketball lifts off at Mile End

Tuesday evening marked a significant piece of history for Top Corner as we launched our maiden Basketball league in Mile End.

League Manager Jen Hart has been working tirelessly behind the scenes for the last few months to ensure all was ready for our opening night and we’re delighted to report she wasn’t left disappointed as everything clicked into place. Jen has assembled a crack team of officials to deliver the best possible league and her line-up includes two hawk-eyed table officials supporting her two referees on court.

With everything in place it was great to see the teams finally playing, especially to such a high standard. Ernst & Young took home the opening night plaudits and ended up as the evenings high-scorers racking up 43 points. JP Morgan and Deloitte both scored 30 apiece and also started their campaigns with wins. Our MVPs for the night were Allan Lang (Moody’s), Richard Welch (JP Morgan) and James Farley (Deloitte). Cube Capital will play their first game next week.

We’ll leave the last word with the teams:

‘Thank you for organising the matches last night and it was really fun to play competitively in the league.’ Ernst & Young

‘We had a blast!’ Informa
